Success? Luck? A Mix of the Two? Something Else?
Like a good recipe, ingredients are key to quality success. In my work with highly-accomplished scientists who turn into executives, I always find four elements that stand out:
1. DRIVEN—Ambition has no end, but isn’t aimless. 2. INTUITIVE—They are living proof of the old saying: They know it when they see it. 3. STRATEGIC—They are nimble in responding to new situations. Always with a solid Plan B. 4. FLEXIBLE—Creative. They try things out and aren’t afraid to fail. They enjoy the unexpected.
Are they born that way? No. They all have expert coaches.
But what makes those leaders uniquely impactful is a fifth element: The skill to know not only when, but how, to leverage each of these elements for success. The skill of knowing how those elements fit together is where I saw scientific leaders bring their organizations and teams to new horizons, innovations and resilience.
